Datasett:
Northern Ireland Life and Times Survey, 2000
Sammendrag
The Northern Ireland Life and Times Survey (NILT) series began in 1998, and was the successor to the previous Northern Ireland Social Attitudes series, (held at the UK Data Archive under SN 33235), which was discontinued in 1996. The aims of the NILT series are:
- to monitor public attitudes towards social policy and political issues in Northern Ireland
- to provide a time series on attitudes to key social policy areas
- to facilitate academic social policy analysis
- to provide a freely available resource on public attitudes for the wider community of users in Northern Ireland
NILT originally had a companion series which also began in 1998, the
Young Life and Times Survey (YLT - see under SN 33313), although the methodology changed in 2003 (see SN 4826). NILT also forms part of the
International Social Survey Programme (ISSP), although it does not do so every year.
No NILT 2011:
Unfortunately, the NILT team were unable to obtain full funding to run NILT in 2011, therefore there is no 2011 survey. However, funding for the 2012 and 2013 surveys has been secured. (The Young Life and Times Survey (YLT) ran as normal in 2011.)
Further information about the NILT series may be found on the
NILT pages on the ARK (Access Research Knowledge) web site.
Main Topics
The dataset records the responses of 1800 adults to the 2000 Northern Ireland Life and Times Survey. Questions are grouped into 'modules'. This dataset covers men's life and times, community relations, political attitudes, work orientations, environment, and respondent's background. Some modules were only asked of half the sample. Questions on social capital and welfare reform were also asked, but are not included in the data file.
Standard Measures

Please note that all analyses of the adult data should be weighted in order to allow for disproportionate household size. The weighting variable is called WTFACTOR. The only exceptions are the few household variables (for example, tenure and household income), which do not need to be weighted. The young person's sample does not need to be weighted.
Renseoperasjoner
The data were processed to the UK Data Archive's 'A*' standard. This is the Archive's highest standard, and means that an extremely rigorous and comprehensive series of checks was carried out to ensure the quality of the data and documentation. Briefly, the most important procedures were as follows. Firstly, checks were made that the number of cases and variables matched the depositor's records. Secondly, checks were made that all variables had comprehensible variable labels and all nominal (categorical) variables had comprehensible value labels. Where possible, either with reference to the documentation and/or in communication with the depositor, labels were accordingly edited or created. Thirdly, logical checks were performed to ensure that nominal (categorical) variables had values within the range defined (either by value labels or in the depositor's documentation). Lastly, any data or documentation that breached confidentiality rules were altered or suppressed to preserve anonymity.

Additional or changed codes:
The following variables had been given additional codes in the dataset which were not included on the questionnaire:
Variable Added Code
NIPTYID3 18 - 'None'
RSECT 4 - 'Other organisation'
SSECT 4 - 'Other organisation'
The following variables had different response codes in the dataset to the questionnaire:
ASSMPOL
'None of these', coded 7 on questionnaire (coded 4 in dataset)
HOWVOTE
'I didn't vote', coded 4 on questionnaire (coded 3 in dataset)
'I wasn't registered to vote', coded 5 (coded 4 in dataset)
MEMVICT
'No' coded 4 on questionnaire (coded 2 in dataset)
'Other' coded 5 on questionnaire (coded 3 in dataset)
NOTDK
'Don't know' coded 8 on questionnaire (coded 'yes' -1, 'no' -2, 'missing' -9)
A number of other variables have various additional response codes of 8/9/99/998 referring to responses such as 'missing,' 'don't know' etc.
A number of discrepancies were found when the age variable 'rage' was checked against the variable 'livearea,' indicating the number of years spent in one area. For the following respondents, the age was less then the number of years lived in the area by more than a year:
